Reflecting on Race

Reflecting on Race

Nature, race and inclusion

We provide support to organisations in considering their engagement with BAME communities.

Currently people of colour are less likely to spend time in nature than white communities; black and Asian people are under represented within environmental organisations and as participants within nature based activities.

The environmental sector has traditionally taken the view that people of colour are not interested in nature or that it isn’t within their culture.

However our ethnographic research shows a need to reframe the issue to include consideration of the attitudes of the general population, environmental practitioners and organisations in understanding why people of colour are less present.

Reflective groups

Our facilitated reflective groups help you to consider your own perspectives on race and your organisation’s engagement and messaging which impacts on inclusion and participation.

Held around the fire in the woods, we provide a safe, non-judgemental and relaxing setting for exploring thoughts and feelings. We can facilitate group reflection over 1 session, 3 sessions or 6 sessions.

Testimonials

“The workshop gave me a better understanding of the complexities and nuances of the conversations we need to start having on a wider basis and helped equip my vocabulary too.”

“The session certainly challenged me and I came away feeling quite naïve in terms of my grasp of the issues. It felt like the beginning of understanding the problem rather than finding solutions. I feel we have a long way to go. I would have loved to have taken part in this as a 6 week session.”

“I found the session thought provoking and helpful when considering how to involve minority communities more”

“Expect to be thinking about your session for some time afterwards! Try and clear your head of background noise and commit fully. The walk to the woodland site, finding firewood and boiling the kettle helps with this. You might feel uncomfortable at times but that’s ok.”
